Akari's composure shines in four-set conquest of Choco Mucho

Akari proved it can thrive not only in pressure-packed finishes but also in grueling, extended battles, surviving two marathon opening sets before overcoming a third-set stumble to defeat Choco Mucho, 27-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, in the PVL On Tour at the Polomolok Gymnasium in South Cotabato on Saturday.

The Chargers showcased both composure and resilience, weathering the Flying Titans' relentless challenge in a match that tested not only skill but also endurance and mental toughness. Akari escaped with a pair of tightly contested opening sets that could have easily gone the other way, then quickly recovered from dropping the third frame to clinch the fourth – and the match – the hard way.

Chenie Tagaod unleashed a crosscourt kill to seal the victory after the Chargers successfully dug a soft hit from Jewel Encarnacion. As the winning point landed, Tagaod collapsed flat on her back – not because of injury, but out of sheer exhaustion. After playing nearly every point in a grueling four-set battle, the physical toll had finally caught up with the Chargers, whose relentless effort was evident until the very last rally.

Earlier, the electrifying finishes in the first two sets sent the jam-packed crowd inside the gym into a frenzy, while hundreds more fans who had spilled outside the venue erupted in celebration. Although locked out of the venue, fans stayed throughout the match, cheering while watching a giant screen at the plaza – a vivid testament to volleyball's soaring popularity in the province and the unwavering passion of its supporters.

The two-hour, 18-minute triumph more than made up for Akari's four-set loss to ZUS Coffee in its tournament opener in Isabela last July 8. The nearly month-long layoff appeared to give the Chargers ample time to regroup, recalibrate and iron out the flaws that surfaced in that defeat.

Playing without several key players, including national team standouts Eya Laure, Dawn Catindig, and Sisi Rondina, alongside regulars Isa Molde, Kat Tolentino, and Deanna Wong, Choco Mucho suffered its third consecutive loss. Despite the shorthanded lineup, the Flying Titans put up a gallant fight against the Chargers, offering a promising glimpse of the team's true potential once they are at full strength.

Tagaod led Akari with 19 points, while Ivy Lacsina provided solid support with 14. Grethcel Soltones chipped in 10 markers, and Faith Nisperos and Jamaica Villena contributed nine and seven points, respectively, highlighting the Chargers' balanced offensive effort.

Choco Mucho actually held the edge in attacks, 55-47, behind four players who scored in double figures. Mean Mendrez and Viray paced the Flying Titans with 16 points apiece, while Madayag and Encarnacion added 14 and 11, respectively.

However, Akari made the difference at the net, dominating the blocking battle with 17 kill blocks, including six from Tagaod. Choco Mucho finished with 11 blocks

The first two sets were a showcase of grit from both squads, with neither side willing to surrender momentum. Choco Mucho repeatedly threatened to seize control, but Akari displayed remarkable poise in the closing moments, capitalizing on key plays and limiting errors to emerge victorious in back-to-back extended frames.

Refusing to fold, the Flying Titans mounted a spirited response in the third set behind the leadership of Madayag. The veteran middle blocker delivered a string of clutch quick attacks, including a fiery conversion followed by a memorable stare-down that injected even more intensity into the already emotionally charged encounter.

Madayag's presence at the net, coupled with her leadership, helped provide the spark Choco Mucho had been searching for after narrowly dropping the first two sets.

Lorraine Pecaña also played a pivotal role in the Flying Titans' resurgence, consistently finding success through the middle with well-timed quick hits while helping Choco Mucho dictate the tempo for most of the set. Their efficient middle attack kept Akari's defense off balance and enabled the Flying Titans to build a comfortable cushion.

Akari attempted one last rally after trailing 16-21 by taking advantage of the league's "premium ball," a special play worth two points, trimming the deficit to three after surviving a strong Madayag quick attack. However, Choco Mucho maintained its composure as

Kamille Cal committed a costly catch-and-throw violation that halted the Chargers' momentum.

Moments later, Ayesha Juegos sealed the set with a rejection of Lacsina's attack, giving the Flying Titans a four-point victory and forcing a fourth set.

But whatever momentum Choco Mucho had built quickly disappeared as Akari responded with authority.

The Chargers stormed to an 8-2 lead in the fourth set, with Villena sparking the early surge with a service ace that immediately put the Flying Titans on the back foot. Backed by timely contributions from coach Tina Salak's rotation, Akari sustained its aggressive play on both offense and defense to build a commanding 13-7 cushion.

But Choco Mucho refused to back down. Fueled by the efforts of Madayag and Viray, the Flying Titans mounted a spirited comeback, leveling the score at 14 after Soltones' attack sailed long on the premium ball.

Akari had a chance to respond with its own premium ball but failed to capitalize, as Viray hammered home a point that the Chargers could not recover, allowing the Flying Titans to pull even again at 19.

Lacsina then delivered a crucial two-handed dump off a Choco Mucho overpass to restore Akari's momentum.

The Chargers closed the match by winning five of the final eight points, sealing the fourth-set victory and completing the triumph.
